Modes- Windows File Recovery

The Windows File Recovery software comes in three different modes.

  • Default: Fast scanning. Best for recovering recently deleted files on a drive formatted with NTFS.
  • Segment: Quit slow. But, best to recover the files from a formatted or corrupted drive.
  • Signature: Lost a file stored on an exFAT, ReFS, or FAT drive? Then, use this mode of Windows File Recovery to recover it.

Downloading, Installing, And Opening Windows File Recovery

You can download and install this free file recovery software directly from the Microsoft Store.

  • Go to Microsoft Store.
  • Search for the Windows File Recovery app.
  • Click on the button named Get in Store app to download and install the software on your computer.
  • After doing that, open the app to begin the recovery process.
  • To do so, open the Start menu on your Windows 10 or 11 computer.
  • Type “File recover…” and tap Enter.
  • Locate and click on the Windows File Recovery app icon from the suggestion list.
  • Make sure that the app is opened with admin rights.
  • Now, you can see the Command Prompt app opened on the screen.

Recovering Files With The Windows File Recovery Software

  • Initially, connect the drive (from which you want to recover the files) to your computer.
  • Now, you have to choose the source drive (from which you want to recover the file) and the destination drive (to which you wish to save the drive). You can’t save the recovered files to their source location.
  • To do so, run the command given below in the CMD window:
  • winfr source-drive: destination-folder [/mode] [/switches]
  • Now, the tool will create a folder called “Recovery_[date and time]” in the destination drive. The recovered files will be restored to this folder.
  • Recover the lost or deleted files with the Windows File Recovery software by following the prompts displayed on the screen

Command And Its Meaning

  • source-drive: Your source drive’s letter. For example, C, D, etc.M
  • destination-folder: The drive letter of your destination folder. For example, J.M
  • /mode: Default, Segment, or Signature. M
  • If you’re using the Default mode, type “/n” followed by the file type. M
  • For example, /n *.docx. M
  • For Segment: Type “/r /n” followed by the file type.M
  • For example, “/r /n *.mp3M
  • For Signature: Type “/x /y:” followed by the file types, such as .wma, WMV, pdf, png, zip, odf, etc.M
